Schwartz, MD, MBA It was challenging, but it was a chance to build something from the very beginning, which most people in academics never get to do. I could not have predicted this path for myself, but now I'm grateful to have had the opportunity. Dr. Moshfeghi: How did business school shape your thinking? Dr. Schwartz: I earned an executive MBA shortly after coming to Bascom Palmer, which was very beneficial for me. I was exposed to many new perspectives and new approaches to problem solving. I feel much more comfortable working with admin- istrators, business people, government officials, philanthropic donors, and others. I think it's similar to how ophthalmologists are able to talk to physicians from other spe- cialties. We don't really understand endocrinology, rheumatology, etc., but we have enough common ground to communicate effectively. Dr. Moshfeghi: What are your hobbies outside of practicing medicine? Dr. Schwartz: Melanie and I have four children: Jessica (15), Reid (11), Oliver (6), and Eliza (3). They keep us pretty busy! During my scarce down time (usually in the car), I like audiobooks: fiction, nonfiction, and lecture series. I especially enjoy history. It's my chance to catch up on all the reading I never got to do during medical training. Dr. Moshfeghi: What's up next for you? Dr. Schwartz: We recently completed our first year in Bascom Palmer's state-of-the- art 20,000-square-foot facility in Naples. The last physical step is to open the surgery center, which is scheduled for November. Then, we will keep growing the clinical, research, and educational programs, all while strengthening our ties to the local com- munity. There is great potential in Naples, and I am excited to see what more we can accomplish. Stephen G. Schwartz, MD, MBA, can be reached at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, 3880 Tamiami Trail North, Naples, FL 34103; email: sschwartz2@med.miami.edu. Disclosures: Dr. Schwartz is partially supported by NIH Center Core Grant P30EY014801 and by an unrestricted grant from Research to Prevent Blindness, New York, to the University of Miami.
